  • How Families Get Checked Out

Families hoping to adopt must undergo a rigorous screening process and be approved to adopt.  In most states, it’s called a Home Study.  A social worker visits them in their home.  She checks out their home to make sure it a safe, secure environment for a child to grow up.  She asks the couple all sorts of questions.  They’ll share with her (and with us) why they want to adopt, all about their backgrounds, their own families growing up, how they operate together as a couple and many other factors.  The social worker will find out how they plan to raise a child and their plans for their future. The social worker will make sure they will be excellent parents.  She’ll confirm through independent background checks that neither the husband nor the wife have any criminal history and that they have never been accused of neglecting or abusing a child. We also ask several people who know the couple well to comment in writing on whether they think they would be great parents.

Most important, YOU will have the opportunity to decide for yourself whether the couples you will be considering will be good parents.  And when you choose the perfect family, you can talk with them on the phone, email and meet in person as often as is practicable.  Hopefully, if your due date allows, you will have plenty of time to get to know each other before the baby arrives.
